What is the duty-free limit for India?
Parcels with an estimated value below $300 CAD are exempt from customs duties - $10 per kg. E.g. a parcel of 5 kg will have estimated duty-free value of $50 CAD
What are the duty for parcels in India?
1.Parcels that have declared value under $10 per kg are duty free in India.
2.Depends on the products in the parcel, the duty can be anywhere from 42%-~80%.
Will indian customs contact the recepient? Why?
When the parcel from Canada arrives to India, indian customs will contact the recepient and request the soft copy of recepient's passport or Aadhar card. Upon providing the documents, the parcel will undergo customs clearance and will be released for delivery. Customs duties may or may not be applied depending on the estimated value and contents of the parcel.
How taxes work when sending parcel to India?
Customs duties (taxes) are calculated based on the value and type of the item:
- General Household Items: Customs duties are approximately 42% of the item’s value.
- Electronics (phones, laptops): Duties range from 75% to 80% of the item's value.
- High-Value Items (luxury goods, jewelry): Taxes can be higher. Items like gold, silver or gemstones are prohibited.
Important Point: Parcels valued below $300 CAD are exempt from customs duties (charged $10 per kg). For instance, a 5 kg parcel will have an estimated duty-free value of $50 CAD. Higher value items may incur additional taxes and duties.
Why does my big, light package cost the same to ship as a smaller, heavier?
Volume weight is a way for shipping companies to charge based on how much space your package takes up, not just its actual weight. If your parcel is large but light, it still takes up a lot of room on the truck or plane, so the shipping cost can be higher. Shipping companies use volume weight to make sure they cover the space used by big, light items. If the volume weight is higher than the actual weight, you'll be charged based on that instead.
Why Insurance is important?
Insurance is recommended to protect your parcel in case it gets damaged, lost, or stolen during transit. This is particularly important for fragile, valuable, or irreplaceable items. With insurance, you can receive compensation or a replacement, ensuring that your parcel is delivered smoothly and on time.
